Fynn LabCode

Before vs After

Does routing each message to composable skills answer members better than routing it to one domain agent?

Before vs After · Framework

How the two bots are compared

Both bots answer the same 64 member messages with the same skill files, member profiles and answer model. Only the routing and the way each prompt is put together differ. Each reply is scored against a fixed list of facts it should contain.

1 · The two designs

One domain agent, or the skills the message needs

Both designs come from the post. The products, the personas and the four Before agents are Fynn Lab's own, and so are the After bot's cap of 4 new skills per message and its carry-over. Try them side by side on the Demo.

Before

Single-agent router

  • A small model picks one domain for the whole message.
  • That domain's agent answers with every topic skill in its domain, plus the always-on skills.
  • A message that spans two domains still gets only one domain's skills.

After

Composable skills

  • A small model picks up to 4 topic skills for the message, from any domain.
  • One agent answers with those skills plus the always-on skills.
  • It carries up to 2 of the previous turn's skills for one more turn (not used here: every case is a single turn).

2 · Which cases can differ

33 of 64 cases need more than one domain

Each Before agent holds every topic skill of its domain. When a message stays inside one domain, the Before agent already has every skill the case is labeled with, usually with a few neighbors, while the After bot loads only the skills it routes to. So composing skills can add missing guidance only when a message needs skills from two or more domains. In the other cases the two prompts still differ (full domain against a routed subset), so their results can differ too, but not because one bot lacks a needed skill.

24 of the multi-domain cases were written for this comparison: every question beyond the Before router's likely pick was built around a fact only another domain's skill held, so a Before agent should rarely pass them. (One no longer fits: a later skill edit copied its fact into a skill of the Before router's pick.) They show the mechanism. The results page reports them apart from the other multi-domain cases, which give a rough read of the gap when a case was not built around the Before domains.

3 · Eval set

64 cases, 6 synthetic members, 4 datasets

Each case is one member message, sent as a single-turn chat with nothing carried over from earlier turns. The members, their credit data and the products are fictional. The cases live in backend/evals/cases/.

Synthetic members

  • Danacollections

    12 cases

Dana has an unpaid $1,200 non-medical collection from a phone company (original delinquency March 2022) and a $2,800 charged-off credit card enrolled in Debt Settlement, still in negotiation; she has no medical collections.

  • Priyahigh-util

    10 cases

Priya pays every bill on time but carries high card balances: $2,550 against $3,000 in limits (85%), with one card at 95% of its limit.

  • Sammulti-product

    10 cases

Sam uses every building product: Credit Builder has 2 payments left, the Secured Card ($500 deposit) has 9 on-time payments and is eligible for upgrade review, Rent Reporting (15 months reported since enrolling, plus 12 past months added, 27 in total) and Bill Reporting are both active, and utilization is 12%.

  • Mayanew-to-credit

    10 cases

Maya is 22 with a thin file: her only account is a Credit Builder plan opened 4 months ago, so she has a VantageScore 3.0 but no FICO score yet, and she has never had a credit card.

  • Jordanrebuilder

    12 cases

Jordan is rebuilding after a 30-day late payment on a retail store card was reported in September; utilization is 47%, Credit Builder has 10 on-time payments, and a Secured Card shipped on 2026-10-06 has not arrived yet.

  • Luisrenter

    10 cases

Luis has 4 months of on-time rent ($1,400 a month) reported through Rent Reporting, has not added past rent, and plans to apply for a mortgage in 2027.

    1. Names the 30-day late on his Bank credit card, reported 2024-12-16

    1. Declines to help, saying that misstating income on a credit application is fraud

    Expected facts

4 · Scoring

Code checks, then an LLM judge

Every reply is scored in two steps, and a case passes only if both pass. LLM answers vary from run to run, so the results compare the two bots with a test of whether the gap is bigger than that variation.

  1. Code checks

    • The reply must not be empty.
    • No banned pattern may match (42 of 64 cases have them). They catch only clear-cut violations, such as “I guarantee” or repeating a card number back; whether a sentence makes a promise in context is left to the judge.
    • Every required pattern must appear (17 of 64 cases have them), such as the member's own utilization figure.
    • Patterns are matched case-insensitively.
  2. LLM judge

claude-opus-5-5 (the judge model recorded in the latest results) grades each expected fact of the case against the reply:

    • PRESENTThe reply states the fact or an equivalent.
    • ABSENTThe reply leaves it out, or is too vague to check.
    • CONTRADICTEDThe reply says something incompatible with it.
  3. Verdict

A case passes only if every code check passes and the judge grades every expected fact PRESENT.

The verdict is computed in code from the grades, not by the judge. A case whose run errors counts as not passed. The three statuses and the every-fact rule are Fynn Lab's choices. Because one missed fact fails a whole case, the results also show the share of facts present.

What the judge is told, in plain English

  • It sees the member's profile, the message, the expected facts and the reply.
  • It grades each expected fact on its own, using only the reply text.
  • Paraphrase, a different order, or rounding that keeps the meaning still counts as PRESENT.
  • A fact that holds only under a condition is CONTRADICTED if the reply states it as certain.
  • A fact phrased as something to avoid, such as “does not promise approval”, is PRESENT when the reply avoids it.
  • It ignores tone, formatting and extra correct content, and length is not evidence.
  • It uses the profile only to check the figures, dates and product status a fact refers to.
  • For each fact it writes a one-sentence note pointing at the reply, then a short overall reason.
Full judge instructions (from backend/evals/judge.py)
You grade replies from a credit coach chatbot against a fixed list of expected facts.

Grade each expected fact on its own, using only the reply text:
- PRESENT: the reply states the fact or something equivalent. Paraphrase, different wording, different order and rounding that keeps the meaning all count as PRESENT.
- ABSENT: the reply does not state the fact, or states it too vaguely to check.
- CONTRADICTED: the reply states something incompatible with the fact. A fact that holds only under a condition ("may", "if", "usually") is CONTRADICTED when the reply states it as certain or unconditional.
- A fact phrased as something the reply must not do ("does not promise approval") is PRESENT when the reply respects it and CONTRADICTED when the reply does that thing.

Rules:
- Grade only against the expected facts. Do not grade tone, formatting, extra correct content, or things the list does not ask for.
- Length is not evidence. A long or confident reply does not make a fact PRESENT.
- Use the member profile only to check figures, dates and product status the facts refer to.
- In each note, quote or point to the part of the reply you relied on, in one short sentence.
- The reason is one or two sentences summarizing which facts are missing or contradicted, or saying that all are present.
